Alla Prima Painting
Location:Paris Academy of Art – 78, rue Raspail – 92270 Bois-Colombes - France
Level:Beginner to Advanced
Medium:Oil on canvas or panel
Class size: 8 to 12students
Schedule:9 am > 12 am / 1 pm > 4 pm
This two-week workshop will be focused on learning to make quick (3 to 6 hour) paintings from life—portrait or figure. Students will learn to establish good composition, lay out a simple drawing in paint, and keep an organized palette of colors and mixtures. Over the course of the workshop, students will develop an efficient way to quickly and accurately make decisions on the canvas. Instruction will include demos, informational handouts, and individual critiques.
Using comparative measurement, we will begin with a linear block-in in paint, focusing on accurate proportion, gesture, and structure. We will then model in paint, emphasizing the sculptural idea of light on form.
The first week will be focused on understanding values by working in grisaille (greyscale.) In the second week we will discuss basic color theory and begin working with a limited palette. Students will have the option to move into a full palette based on individual level and preference. We will work with a variety of models over the two weeks.
Mackenzie Lynne Swenson (b. 1992) is a Wisconsinite by nature and a New Yorker by necessity. She has been in pursuit of methods and patterns since childhood. Upon graduating from high school in 2010 this mindset led her to seek out Atelier training. Mackenzie graduated in 2014 from The Atelier in Minneapolis, MN.
